Mesa Valley Chronicles: Jim Benedict- Chapter 1

Mesa Valley Chronicles: Jim Benedict is about a single father living  in a town called Mesa Valley, created by RFLong7.  His character inspired this story.  He meets a mysterious woman on the run!

Chapter 1

Jim ran through the park for his daily morning jog.  He saw her curled up on the park bench, sound asleep once again.  He’d seen her there every morning for the past week.

Usually,  Jim minded his own business, but something about her drew him to her.  She was very lovely, and she looked extremely vulnerable.  Even in a small town like Mesa Valley there was a fair amount of criminal activity, and it wasn’t safe for a young woman to sleep in the park alone.

On the spur of the moment, Jim decided to approach her.  He didn’t want to frighten her, so he loudly cleared his throat.

“Ah, Hmm, excuse me miss.”, he said.  She came slowly awake.  When she became aware of him standing there, she sat bolt upright on the bench.

“I’m sorry.  I didn’t intend to startle you.”, he quickly apologized.  “It’s just that I’ve seen you sleeping here in the park all week, and since you’re new in town,  I wanted to tell you that it’s not safe to sleep here.”, he told her.

Cillay gazed up at him and sighed.  She was so tired, physically and mentally.  The bus ticket to Mesa Valley had taken the rest of her cash.  She dare not use her credit card because that would lead Tony directly to her.  She prayed that this time, he wouldn’t find her.

She had been trying to find a job all week.  She knew that it would be impossible to find a well-paying job without a college degree, but she had been unable to find a job even at the grocery store.

She had slept here each night, keeping her overnight bag in a locker at the bus station.  She had brought very little clothing with her.  Each morning she went to the local gym to shower and change.  She picked fruit from the town garden to eat and returned here to the park each night to sleep.

She didn’t know what to say to the young man standing before her.
“Thank you for telling me.”, she finally said, looking embarrassed.  Jim saw her embarrassment and tried to think quickly.

“Look, I know you don’t know me.  My name is Jim Benedict, and I’m a member of the city council.  If you ask anyone in town, they will vouch for me.”

I’ve got a big house over on Arroyo Circle.  It’s just my baby son and me, and you’re welcome to stay in  one of the extra bedrooms as long as you need it.”, he offered.

Cillay thought about his offer for a few moments.
“That’s very generous of you Mr. Benedict, but I’m sorry to say that I have no money to pay you.  I’m trying to find a job.  So far I’ve had no success.”, she told him, flushing with embarrassment.

“You misunderstood me, Ms.__”, he paused, “I don’t know your name.”

“I’m Cillay.  Cillay Rockwell.”, she told him.

“A beautiful name for a beautiful girl,” Jim thought to himself.
“You don’t have to pay me anything.  The room is just sitting there empty.  If it makes you feel better, you could help me out with the cooking and cleaning in exchange for room and board.”

She looked up at him, indecision on her face.

“Good.  It’s decided, you’re coming home with me.,” he said, taking her hand and helping her rise from the bench.  Jim suddenly remembered that he hadn’t driven his car to the park.  He had jogged there.  He pulled out his cell phone and called a taxi.

“Do you have any luggage?,” he asked her looking around the bench.

“Just my overnight bag.  It’s in a locker at the bus station.”, she told him.
Jim looked at his watch.  If they hurried, he’d have time to get Cillay settled, and he’d still be on time for work.

When they arrived back at his home, Jim gave Cillay a quick tour of the house.
“Make yourself at home.,” he told her and excused himself to shower and change for work.

It only took Cillay a few moments to unpack.  Then she returned downstairs to wait for Jim.

After Jim finished dressing,  he took Cillay into the nursery to meet little Richard and his babysitter.  Cillay asked if she could hold him, and Jim handed Richard to her.  Richard took to her right away, smiling and laughing. Cillay loved little Richard right away. “Oh, you are so adorable.,” she cooed to him.

Jim watched  them.  He was very relieved and pleased that they liked each other.

“Well, I’ve got to get to work.  If you need me for anything, Cillay, here is my cell number and work number.”, he said, handing her his business card.

“Thank you Mr. Benedict.,” Cillay said taking the card.

“Please call me, Jim.”, he told her. “I’ll see you later.,” he said and left for work.

Cillay returned to her room, and  made sure that her other outfit was ready to wear.  Then she decided to indulge herself and take a nice hot bath before she dressed to go job hunting.

As she soaked in the tub, she thought about Jim.  She knew that she would have to give him an explanation as to why she was in this situation.  She instinctively felt that she could trust him.  She would have to trust him, but she wasn’t sure if it was right to involve him in her messy life.

She thought about little Richard and wondered about his mother.  Jim had said that it was just him and Richard living here.

She got out of the tub and dressed for her job hunt.  Everywhere she went, she got the same response. “I’m sorry Miss Rockwood, but we need someone with experience.”, and since Cillay had never had a job, she had no work experience.

Who is Tony?  Why is Cillay  afraid of him?  Will he find her?

Cillay is Tinkara Niezicki created by sablov33.

  1. Just started reading this and I’m really intrigued by both the main characters. Jim seems like a good guy, always looking out for everyone’s best interests, the kind of guy who gets along with everyone, so why does little Richard not have a mom, what could have driven her away to leave her little boy, that’s if she’s still alive. So many questions, I’m so curious. And Cillay, being on the run like that, I wonder what demons she’s running away from, hopefully she keeps running until she’s straight in Jim’s arms or the arms of someone decent like Jim. I don’t like the sound of Tony, he sounds like a deranged ex, or a pimp or an obsessed fan, the fact that she moved away means he’s a huge threat to her, and if he finds her, I shudder to think what will happen to little Richard and Jim. What a captivating first chapter. Off to read some more.

BTW, Cillay is very pretty. I like her hair.

  2. I’m glad you found my story Val!

Most people would have just ignored Cillay or tried to take advantage of her. It’s good that Jim took an interest in her.
    Cillay’s hair is from Peggy.

  3. This is very interesting! I am very curious as to why she was sleeping there and what/who has frightened her that much to have her sleep in a public park. Good thing Jim came around and offered her a place to stay. He seems like a genuinely nice man!
This road to getting back on her feet will be a long hard road but I have a feeling the sweet face of Richard and Jim’s kindness will make it a little easier.

  4. I absolutely love the story you have started here ^^ I think it’s the first time I’ve read about someone being on the run, so kudos to you for being original as well. I’m on my way to read up on the rest of your updates xD
